Proposal for Federal Electoral Redistribution of Western Australia Published

1 August 2008

The report detailing the proposed boundaries for Western Australia’s federal electoral divisions was released today by the Redistribution Committee for Western Australia.

The Electoral Commissioner and Chair of the Committee, Mr Ian Campbell, said the redistribution of the federal boundaries was required because 7 years had elapsed since the last redistribution of Western Australia.

The Committee’s proposed boundaries for the 15 federal electoral divisions in Western Australia show a reconfiguration of the rural divisions and adjustments to the metropolitan divisions.

Mr Campbell said that the Committee was required by legislation to draw new boundaries which, as at 17 June 2012, aimed to ensure that the number of electors in each division did not deviate by more than 3.5% below or above the state’s average enrolment of 95,871.  The Committee also took into account community of interests, communication and transport links, physical features, and current federal boundaries when making its proposal.

The full details of the Western Australia Redistribution Committee’s proposal, including the Committee’s considerations in making the proposal, are in its report available on the AEC website at www.aec.gov.au.

Mr Campbell said that the consultative nature of the redistribution process continues with individuals and organisations now able to lodge objections to the Committee’s proposed redistribution.

Written objections must be lodged with the Australian Electoral Commission before 6.00pm on Friday 29 August 2008:

  • in person at Level 3, 111 St Georges Terrace, Perth, WA, 6000, or
  • by mail to GPO Box 9867, Perth, WA, 6848, or
  • by email to wa.redistribution@aec.gov.au, or
  • by facsimile to (08) 6363 8019.

All objections received by the deadline will be available for public inspection and comment at the AEC State Office in Perth and on the AEC website from Monday 1 September 2008.
