The by-election for the Division of Mayo will be held on Saturday, 6 September 2008 the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) announced today.

The AEC Divisional Returning Officer for Mayo, Peter Verkerk, said that people living in the electorate of Mayo must ensure that they are correctly enrolled to vote.

“All Australian citizens aged 18 years and over living in the Mayo electorate are eligible to vote in this by-election, as long as they are correctly enrolled to vote.”

“If you’re not on the electoral roll, you must fill in an enrolment form immediately and return it to the AEC by 8pm, Monday 4 August 2008.”

“If you’re already on the roll but recently moved and need to update your enrolment, you have until 8pm Friday 8 August 2008 to get your completed enrolment form to the AEC,” he said.

Enrolment forms can be downloaded from the AEC website at www.aec.gov.au and are available at any Australia Post outlet or AEC office as well as at any Medicare, Centrelink, or Australian Tax Office.

Mr Verkerk also said people who had recently moved from or to the electorate of Mayo needed to update their enrolment to their new address before 8pm on Friday 8 August 2008.

Issue of the writ:	Monday 4 August 2008
Deadline for new enrolments:	8pm, Monday 4 August 2008
Electoral roll closes:	8pm, Friday 8 August 2008
Close of candidate nominations:	12 noon, Thursday 14 August 2008
Declaration of candidate nominations:	12 noon, Friday 15 August 2008
Election day:	Saturday 6 September 2008

Voting is compulsory for Australian citizens aged 18 years and over and enrolled in the electorate of Mayo.
