Indigenous Cadetship
The National Indigenous Cadetship Project (NICP) is a government-funded project administered by the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR), and aims to improve the professional employment prospects of indigenous Australians by linking employers and indigenous students in a cadetship arrangment, that involves both full-time study and work placements.
Under the AEC’s program, cadets undertake full-time study for 40 weeks of the year, and undertake a work placement for 12 weeks. As the AEC has divisional offices around the country, work placements usually take place in a cadet’s local community.
Cadets are paid an allowance during periods of full-time study, and a full-time salary during work placements. All cadets are assigned a mentor who will provide advice and support during the cadetship.
The AEC will seek cadets from one of two sources:
- persons registered on the NICP website; or
- through the Australian Public Service Commission’s annual bulk recruitment round.
